Guggal 
(Commiphora wightii (Arnott) Bhand.)

Uses: Carminative, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, aphrodisiac and also used against rheumatoid arthritis.

Parts Used: Gum resin

Active Ingredients: Guggalsterones Z & E guggul sterols, diterpenoids, terpene & cambrene.

Ayurvedic preparation: Yogarajaguggulu, Kaishoreguggulu and Chandraprabhavati.

Endangered plant  

Cultural Practices:

¨      Habit: Perennial crop, not under cultivation, a desert plant adjusted to grow in very difficult soil and moisture conditions

¨      Propagation: Stem cuttings

¨      Habitat: Gujarat, Rajastan and Deccan

¨      Harvesting: Harvesting can be done when the plant attain 5-8 years of age.  Gum is tapped by shallow incision on the bark with sharp chisel and small quantity of Guggal gum with Etheral enhances the gum secretion

¨      Harvesting Period: December -March

¨      Yield: 7-9 q/ha of Guggal gum

¨      Post harvest: Gum is dried in shade and stored.
